Lena Elster

Elena Sorokina (Lena Elster) is a multimedia artist, born 1962 in Russia – lives and works in Vienna, Austria. Elena began her career as an architect, but even then she was drawn to fine art and new media. In addition to architectural practice, she was passionate about painting and web design, intuitively feeling the growing power of visual culture in the digital space.

About fifteen years ago, Elena moved to Vienna, to study Art History in University of Vienna. This education allowed her to deeply understand the visual language and combine the traditions of classical painting with modern digital technologies. Having received additional education in the field of digital art, she has formed a unique artistic practice in which virtual images and pictorial expressiveness form a dense, multi-layered fabric of personal and social statements.

Lena Elster’s works explore issues of identity, corporality, femininity. Her art combines the successful aspects of classical painting, which she has mastered perfectly, and unique possibilities in the context of contemporary fine art.

By combining painting, digital graphics and installation elements, Lena Elster creates powerful visual narratives that speak of fragility and strength, pain and overcoming, inner light and shadow. Her artistic language is a demonstration of the diverse possibilities of various types of fine art and a successful combination of its artistic tools.
